Somatostatin analogues are indicated for a variety of conditions including acromegaly, neuroendocrine tumours, especially carcinoid, and Cushing’s disease. As the indications vary between the three available drugs it is not always possible to suggest a suitable alternative.
Although the half-life of the analogues is relatively short, the use of long-acting formulations will result in prolonged plasma, and therefore breast milk levels in the mother.
