The different legal mechanisms to give the vaccine are described dependent on Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) registration

Nurse registered with NMC

This group can:

  • work under the National Protocol (all stages)
  • act as clinical supervisor for the National Protocol under Regulation 3A
  • work under the Patient Group Direction (PGD)
  • work under a PSD written by an appropriate practitioner

This group cannot:

  • write a Patient Specific Direction (PSD)

Nurse registered with NMC (annotated as Independent Prescriber)

This group can:

  • work under the National Protocol (all stages)
  • act as clinical supervisor for the National Protocol under Regulation 3A
  • write a Patient Specific Direction (PSD)
  • work under a PSD written by an appropriate practitioner
  • work under the Patient Group Direction (PGD)

Midwife registered with NMC

This group can:

  • work under the National Protocol (all stages)
  • work under the Patient Group Direction (PGD)
  • work under a PSD written by an appropriate practitioner

This group cannot:

  • act as clinical supervisor for the National Protocol under Regulation 3A
  • write a Patient Specific Direction (PSD)

Midwife registered with NMC (annotated as Nurse Independent Prescriber)

This group can:

  • work under the National Protocol (all stages)
  • work under the Patient Group Direction (PGD)
  • work under a PSD written by an appropriate practitioner
  • write a Patient Specific Direction (PSD)

This group cannot:

  • act as clinical supervisor for the National Protocol under Regulation 3A

Nursing Associate registered with NMC

This group can:

  • work under the National Protocol (all stages)
  • work under a PSD written by an appropriate practitioner

This group cannot:

  • work under the Patient Group Direction (PGD)
  • act as clinical supervisor for the National Protocol under regulation 3A
  • write a Patient Specific Direction (PSD)

Nursing or midwifery professional not registered with the NMC (e.g. Healthcare Assistant)

This group can:

  • work under the National Protocol (stages 2-4)
  • work under a PSD written by an appropriate practitioner

This group cannot:

  • act as clinical supervisor for the National Protocol under Regulation 3A
  • write a Patient Specific Direction (PSD)
  • work under the Patient Group Direction (PGD)

Nursing or midwifery professional no longer registered with the NMC

This group can:

  • work under the National Protocol (stages 2-4)
  • work under a PSD written by an appropriate practitioner

This group cannot:

  • act as clinical supervisor for the National Protocol under Regulation 3A
  • write a Patient Specific Direction (PSD)
  • work under the Patient Group Direction (PGD)

Student nursing or midwifery professional

This group can:

  • work under the National Protocol (stages 2-4)
  • work under a PSD written by an appropriate practitioner

This group cannot:

  • act as clinical supervisor for the National Protocol under Regulation 3A
  • write a Patient Specific Direction (PSD)
  • work under the Patient Group Direction (PGD)
