About PGDs

Only those professions listed in legislation can operate under a Patient Group Direction (PGD).

Nursing Associates and Physician Associates

Neither Nursing Associates nor Physician Associates are currently included within the legislation so cannot operate under a PGD.

Future developments

Whilst these professions may be considered in the future for inclusion within the legislation this would require scoping and consultation by NHS England, the support of the Commission on Human Medicines (CHM) and the agreement of the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care before the legislation could be revised. This is a lengthy process and we have not been informed of any plans to begin the exercise.
