Drugs used orally or parenterally for severe eczema and psoriasis have a varied pharmacology, mainly either modifying the immune response to the disease or modifying the disease process. The choice of drug will depend on a number of variables, including the disease severity and response to other drugs.
Topical corticosteroids or other topical preparations for eczema/psoriasis may be a suitable alternative, at least whilst breastfeeding continues, although this option may be precluded by disease severity.
Oral retinoids (alitretinoin and acitretin) are highly teratogenic and may only be used in the mother in accordance with strict contraception guidance.
