Drugs in this group have varying uses immediately before, during or following eye surgery. Their use is, therefore, usually on a relatively short-term basis. In addition, for drugs used post-surgery, the recovery period will further limit exposure of the infant to drug ingestion from breast milk.
Peri -operative preparations for ophthalmic use have limited systemic absorption in the mother, and pose negligible risk to a breastfed infant. Where practical, systemic absorption from eye drops can be minimised by restricting passage into tear ducts immediately after administration (link to technique).
