Colchicine and canakinumab are normally used to treat the symptoms of acute attacks of gout. Allopurinol, febuxostat and sulfinpyrazone are used for the long-term control of gout after resolution of the acute attack. Rasburicase is indicated for hyperuricaemia associated with cytotoxic drugs.
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) are a preferred alternative for the pain of an acute attack.
Sulfinpyrazone or allopurinol are probably the best options for long-term control in a breastfeeding mother.
